Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

The month of Ramadhaan is here, a month that Allaah has commanded us to fast, and so as a result Muslims around the world will be fasting.

Today we find that people all fast, but they have various intentions and reasons for fasting.

When Allaah ordained it upon us, Allaah ordained it for the purpose of us attaining taqwaa.

Now what is taqwaa? Taqwaa is that fear and awe of Allaah which prevents you from disobeying Allaah.

Now how is this related to fasting? When you fast, then you prevent yourself from all forms of food and drink, despite having the ability to eat and drink, despite the fact that no person will see you eating, despite all that you hold yourself back from eating and drinking etc for so many hours every day, because you know that Allaah would see, and you would know in your heart that you did not really fast.

Now in a like manner, taqwaa is supposed to be such that you prevent yourself from sinning, because again Allaah sees you, and you in your heart will know that you had sinned against Allaah.

So it is for this reason that Allaah ordained the month of Ramadhaan upon us, because as Allaah says:

“O you have believed, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you so that you may attain taqwaa.” – Surah Baqarah Aayah 183.

However today we find that many people fast, but they do so with the wrong intentions.

Some people fast because it’s an excuse to diet, some people do so to detoxify their systems, some do so because they say they want to identify with the poor etc.

Now while thinking of the poor is a good thing, it was not the reason Allaah ordained fasting.

And while dieting and detoxifying is found by fasting, this was not why Allaah ordained Ramadhaan.

In order to derive full blessings from Ramadhaan, one has to do so with the correct intention, otherwise Ramadhaan will come and Ramadhaan will go and no real benefit will be gained.

So fast with the intention of attaining taqwaa, and if by the way you get other perks like having your system detoxified and so on, then that is from the fadhl of Allaah, but it should not be made the primary objective.

May Allaah correct our intentions, accept our fasting, and grant us taqwaa.

Wallaahu A`laa Wa A`lam.

Being In a State of Fasting

People think that in Ramadhaan we simply need to stop eating and drinking, only our stomachs must fast, but that is incorrect.

Our minds need to fast, by not thinking of haraam.

Our eyes need to fast, by not looking at haraam, be it in the form of spying on people, or whether it is men looking at ghayr mahram women and vice versa.

Our ears need to fast, by not listening to haraam, whether it’s music, flirtatious talks, lies, slander, gossiping etc.

Our mouths need to fast, by not consuming haraam, whether it’s actual haraam food, or haraam carrion chickens, or food bought with haraam money.

Our tongues need to fast, by not speaking haraam, whether it’s speaking to ghayr mahram females or vice versa, or whether it’s swearing, shouting, lying, backbiting, carrying tales etc.

Our arms need to fast, by not touching haraam, whether it’s by shaking hands with ghayr mahram women and vice versa, or whether it’s by dealing in haraam goods, or hitting people unjustly etc.

Our legs need to fast, by not walking towards haraam, be it in the form of dancing or walking towards evil etc.

But this is not something that is restricted to the month of ramadhaan, this is how a muslim should live his life 24/7, 365 days a year.

May Allaah grant us the tawfeeq to practice upon all this, Aameen.
