The Bid`ah of Seerah Jalsahs

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

One of the innovations that has gained momentum in recent times is that of the “Seerah Jalsahs”, these Jalsahs are conducted by people who claim to be followers of the Sunnah upon the Manhaj of the Ulamaa of Deoband, while the reality is that they are more the followers of their base desires upon the Manhaj of the Mubtadi`ah.

It is as though they feel that “if you can’t beat them, join them”, so they organise these Mawlid programmes just calling it by another name; Seerah Jalsahs.

Many of the people engaged in these programmes were themselves amongst those who used to condemn the Barelwis for celebrating Mawlid, and yet today they are doing the same thing, while they think that if they call it by another name then it suddenly Halaalises the programme.

This is the very embodiment of what Bid`ah is.

People who bring about innovative practices while thinking it to be good deeds that will bring them closer to Allaah.

That is why the `Ulamaa used to be harder on Bid`ah than on sin, because a man who sins knows that what he’s doing is wrong and so he will be inclined to make Tawbah.

But the man who does Bid`ah, he feels he is doing good and that he will be rewarded for it, so where will such a person ever repent from his actions?

Shaytaan has used many ploys to trap these people into justifying their Bid`ah, these days they conduct these Jalsahs not on the 12th of Rabee` ul Awwal, but a few days before or after it, and by doing so they think that everything is all fine and dandy.

But again, for the other eleven months of the year no Seerah programmes are conducted. Which shows that the purpose of these programmes is not to bring alive the Seerah amongst the people, rather it’s to do no more than also have a piece of the Bid`ah pie.

The Sahaabah, Taabi`een, Atbaa’ut Taabi`een, the 4 Imaams and the entire Salaf who were the Khayrul Quroon did not single out this night for any special acts, not even for reciting Qur’aan or performing Nafl Salaah, for the simple reason that this was not taught by Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, thus to add anything which was not taught by Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam is to introduce something new into the Deen which was not a part of it, making it a rejected innovation.

The following are the statements of some of the Akaabireen of Deoband regarding the Seerah Jalsahs when it had just started rearing its head so two hundred years ago.

Their statements are clear cut in its prohibition of the newly invented Seerah Jalsahs.

For those people who seriously want to enliven the Seerah, then they should conduct their programmes in any of the other eleven months which Allaah Has given them.

May Allaah grant us the understanding and make us true followers of the Sunnah. Aameen.

The View of Hazrat Moulana Husain Ahmad Madani (rahimahullah), one of the greatest Mujaahids of the 14th century of Islam

Sheikhul Hadith Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah) writes:

Hazrat Moulana Husain Ahmad Madani (rahimahullah) once came to Sahaaranpur on the 12th of Rabee‘ul Awwal when the people had decided to hold a Seerat Jalsah and insisted that Hazrat Moulana Madani (rahimahullah) attend and deliver a bayaan. I said that Mowlood is now being held in the name of Seerat. When people came to call Hazrat Madani (rahimahullah) for the bayaan, he sternly refused to come and began reprimanding them saying, “It seems like all the love and mahabbat you show for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is only on the 12th of Rabee‘ul Awwal.

Why are you not having this program at any other time in the year and are confining it to the 12th of Rabee‘ul Awwal?”

The people replied, “Hazrat! We are desirous of listening to bayaans on the seerat of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) at any time of the year. However, there is nobody willing to address us and deliver bayaans on the seerat of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) at other times.”

Hazrat Madani (rahimahullah) said, “If the people are prepared, I am willing to give the bayaan at other times.”

The people, without thinking, accepted this offer. Hazrat Madani (rahimahullah) promised to come and give a bayaan on the topic of seerat weekly on a Thursday night since his jumu‘ah programs were already arranged for a few months in advance. Apart from the occasions when he was out travelling, Hazrat (rahimahullah) came to Sahaaranpur every Thursday night for approximately four months for this program. Hazrat (rahimahullah) would reach Sahaaranpur at 8:30 and proceed directly to the Jaami‘ Musjid where he would perform salaah and thereafter commence the lecture. After the lecture, between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning, Hazrat (rahimahullah) would come to my home.

The View of Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi (rahimahullah), the Faqeeh of the 15th century of Islam

On the night of Me‘raaj, after the Esha Salaah, a bayaan is given to enlighten us regarding the incident of Me‘raaj. Similarly, a bayaan is given on the 12th Rabee‘ul Awwal after the Esha Salaah. Are these practices correct or are they innovations in Deen?

There is no special sunnah practice to be carried out exclusively on these nights. Hence these nights should be regarded the same as other ordinary nights. We should not, from our own side, add anything to Deen which is not part of Deen.

The View of Hazrat Sayyid Ahmed Shaheed Saheb (rahimahullah), the greatest Mujaddid of the 13th century of Islam

When Hazrat Sayyid Ahmed Shaheed Saheb (rahimahullah) had completed performing Haj, he proceeded to the blessed city of Madinah Munawwarah. During his stay in Madinah Munawwarah, a unique incident occurred which truly revealed his uncompromising commitment to completely following the Shariat. This incident is also a great lesson and means of inspiration for those who claim to be ardent lovers of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and claim to follow Deen entirely.

Some of the ‘Ulamaa and prominent people of the city had gathered in the musjid on the 12th of Rabee‘ul Awwal. A person came to Sayyid Ahmed Shaheed (rahimahullah) and said, “Tonight is the 12th of Rabee ‘ul Awwal and I have been sent by the prominent people of the city to invite you to the program in the musjid.”

Sayyid Saheb (rahimahullah) was initially lying down when the person came to call him. On receiving the invitation, however, he immediately sat up and addressed Moulana ‘Abdul Hayy Saheb, the son-in-law and student of Shah ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Saheb (rahimahullah), saying, “Tell this person that if this program in the musjid is being held for the mere sake of entertainment, then excuse us from attending it. If it is held with the intention of ‘ibaadat, however, then prove and establish its position in Deen from the Qur’aan and Sunnah. It is only for the purpose of ‘ibaadat and earning reward that we have left our homes and travelled to this blessed land. Hence if it is proven that this program is established from the Qur’aan and Sunnah, we will wholeheartedly be pleased to attend. However, if it cannot be proven that this program is established in the Sunnah then we are totally absolved of it and have nothing to do with it.”

Moulana ‘Abdul Hayy (rahimahullah) explained to the person what Sayyid Ahmed Shaheed Saheb (rahimahullah) had said. The person returned to the gathering in the musjid and informed them of Sayyid Saheb’s response. On hearing what Sayyid Ahmed Shaheed (rahimahullah) said, they all remained silent.

This incident occurred almost two hundred years ago in the year 1238AH (1822) and was certainly free of all the evil practices and customs prevalent today. Despite that, when Sayyid Saheb (rahimahullah) had seen that this was not established in the Sunnah, as it was not practiced by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), he excused himself and refused to attend.

The Ruling on Using Makeup/Nail Polish etc in Islaam.

The question on the permissibility/impermissibility of conventional makeup, nail polish, lipstick etc is one which is often discussed, but which causes a lot of problems for the masses who are left confused on its ruling.

The main problem with all these things is not the ingredients, or whether it is waterproof or not, but rather it is the fact that primarily it is Tashabbuh (imitation) of immoral Kuffaar.

Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn `Umar Radhiallaahu `Anhumaa said that Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Whoever imitates a people then he is of them.” Sunan Abu Daawood.

The second problem is that the women who wear these things only apply it for the purpose of going out in public, where they inevitably will be seen by Ghayr Mahaarim males regardless of whether they intended to make a display of themselves or not.

Allaah Ta`aalaa says in Surah Al-Ahzaab, Aayah 33: “And remain in your homes, and do not display yourselves like the display of the days of ignorance…”

Thus by them doing so, they incur sin both upon themselves as well as the men who are tempted by them.

Putting aside all the other problems that comes along with the usage of makeup etc, if just these two issues are taken into consideration then it becomes clear to see that it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to use makeup and nail polish etc.

So in conclusion the issue is not whether there are Haraam ingredients in the nail polish, makeup etc, because even though all the ingredients may be Halaal, and it may even be washable under normal water thus washing away during Wudhoo and Ghusl, but these two factors of Tashabbuh and Tabarruj (displaying one’s self) will still be found, thereby causing it to be Haraam.

And Allaah Knows Best.

Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-`Asqalaani Rahimahullaah narrates that Jamaaluddeen Ibraaheem Ibn Muhammad At-Tayyibee said:

“One of the leaders of the Mongols became Christian, and was visited by a group of senior Christians and Mongols, when one of them (Christians) started belittling Nabi Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam, and there was a hunting dog tied up nearby, so when he started increasing his insults the dog jumped on him and scratched him but they managed to free him from it, so one of the people present said: “This (happened) because of what you said about Muhammad (Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam).”

He replied: “Not at all, rather this dog is arrogant, and it saw me pointing with my hand, so it thought that I wanted to hit it.”

So he returned to what he was saying, and increased (his insults), so the dog jumped on him again, seized his throat and ripped it out, and he died immediately.

Because of that, about 40,000 Mongols accepted Islaam.”

Ad-Durarul Kaaminah, Vol 3, Page 128-129. Printed by Dar Al-Jeel, Beirut.

Such is the love for Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam by dogs and other animals, that they cannot bear to have Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam insulted while they sit still and do nothing. While today people make all sorts of baatil statements such as “Leave them, Islaam believes in freedom of speech” and “They shouldn’t be killed for insults though” and other such nonsensical statements.

And what a blessed action it was of this dog, that as a result Allaah guided 40,000 people to Islaam.

So do not ever get mislead into thinking that by “turning the other cheek” you will be able to guide more people to Islaam, because it is Allaah who guides, not us.

May Allaah grant us all the understanding.
