Does numerology have a place in islam?

 

Question:

 

Salaams. Mufti saheb. Does numerology have a place in islam? What about the abjad numeric value system and islam?

 

Answer:

 

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

 

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

 

Wa `alaykumus salaam.

 

These things do not have a place in Islaam, because it was not ordained by Allaah and His Rasool Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam, but rather was adopted from the philosophers, and Hadhrat `Aa’ishah Radhiallaahu `Anhaa reports that Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam said:

 

“Whoever introduces something into this matter (i.e. Islaam) of ours that is not part of it, it shall be rejected.”Saheeh Muslim. [i]

 

Allaah did not reveal the Qur’aan with secret passages and hidden meanings, rather Allaah revealed the Qur’aan in a clear and unambiguous way.

 

Allaah says in Surah Yaa-Seen, Aayah 69: “And We did not teach him (i.e. Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) poetry nor is it befitting for him, it (the Qur’aan) is not but a reminder and a clear Qur’aan.” [ii]

 

Furthermore Imaam Al-Qarraafi Rahimahullaah reports in Anwaarul Burooq Fee Anwaa’il Furooq: “In Al-I`tisaam of Abu Is’haaq Ash-Shaatibi (he mentions): “If the origin of the Du`aa or Adhkaar is not legislated, like the ones that the scholars claim are based on numerology, and that is the one that Al-Boni and others who follow in his footsteps and are similar to him were interested in, then it is a real compounded innovation, because that knowledge is from philosophy which was taken from their first philosophy teacher, who is Aristotle….” [iii]

 [i]عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ. – رواه الإمام مسلم رحمه الله في صحيحه.

 [ii]وَمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ الشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ وَقُرْآنٌ مُبِينٌ. – سورة يس آية ٦٩.

 [iii]وَفِي الِاعْتِصَامِ لِأَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّاطِبِيِّ وَإِنْ كَانَ أَصْلُ الدُّعَاءِ وَالْأَذْكَارِ غَيْرَ مَشْرُوعٍ كَالَّتِي يَزْعُمُ الْعُلَمَاءُ أَنَّهَا مَبْنِيَّةٌ عَلَى عِلْمِ الْحُرُوفِ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي اعْتَنَى بِهِ الْبَوْنِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُ مِمَّنْ حَذَا حَذْوَهُ أَوْ قَارَبَهُ فَهِيَ بِدْعَةٌ حَقِيقَةٌ مُرَكَّبَةٌ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ الْعِلْمَ فَلْسَفَةٌ أَلْطَفُ مِنْ فَلْسَفَةِ مُعَلِّمِهِمْ الْأَوَّلِ وَهُوَ أَرِسْطُو طَالِيسَ... – قاله الإمام القرافي رحمه الله في كتابه أنوار البروق في أنواء الفروق.
