What was the name of iblis before his disobedience?

Question:

I was wondering if one of the learned moulanas could clarify what was the name of iblis before his disobedience?

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

His name was `Azaazeel, it is Hebrew in origin, like the names of the angels, Jibreel, Meekaa’eel etc.

The “Eel” part is Hebrew for “Allaah”, “Jibr” means “slave” and “Eel” is “Allaah”, therefore “Jibreel” means “Slave of Allaah“.

Imaam At-Tabari Rahimahullaah reports in Jaami`ul Bayaan Fee ta’weelil Qur’aan that `Ikrimah Rahimahullaah said: “’Jibr’ means ‘slave’, ‘Eel’ means ‘Allaah’.” [i]

Likewise with `Azaazeel, the “Eel” part means “Allaah”, while “`Azaaz” means “Strengthened”, so “`Azaazeel” means “Strengthened by Allaah“.

Imaam Ibn Abiz Zamanayn Rahimahullaah says in Tafseerul Qur’aanil `Azeez: “It has been said that his name was `Azaazeel, but when Allaah cursed him and became angry with him he (Iblees) lost hope in His mercy, that is: He (Iblees) lost hope, so He named him “Iblees”.” [ii]

The name “Iblees” means “One who has lost hope”, in the case of iblees he lost hope of Allaah’s Mercy hence why he became known as Iblees.

And Allaah knows best.

Was imran the father of mariam a prophet?

Question:

Was imran the father of mariam a prophet? I read on a website about imran being a prophet so I just wanted it clarified.

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

We do not know `Imraan, the father of Maryam `Alayhas Salaam as a Nabi.

Allaah has mentioned The wife of `Imraan, The family of `Imraan and the Daughter of `Imraan at different places in the Qur’aan, so his name is mentioned explicitly in the Qur’aan, and had he been a Nabi then Allaah would have listed him amongst the other Ambiyaa `Alayhimus Salaam that are also mentioned by name in the Qur’aan, but the fact that Allaah did not do so is an indication of him not being a Nabi.

The Mufassireen differ on his full name, Imaam Al-Baghawi Rahimahullaah has reported in his Tafseer Ma`aalimut Tanzeel Fee Tafseeril Qur’aan a few of the opinions:

Imaam Muqaatil Rahimahullaah says his name was: `Imraan Ibn Yas’hur. [i]

Imaam Hasan and Imaam Wahb Rahimahumallaah say his name was: `Imraan Ibn Ash’ham. [ii]

While yet others say it was: `Imraan Ibn Maathaan. [iii]

Imaam Al-Baghawi Rahimahullaah says: “The sons of Maathaan were the leaders, scholars and monks of the children of Israel.” [iv]

So what we do know is that he was a pious person, and one of the leaders of Banee Israa’eel, but no one has mentioned him being a Nabi.

And Allaah knows best.
