Question:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Mlna, can Mlna please give me the islamice view on tattoo’s? JazaakAllah

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Wa`alaykumus salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Tattoos have been expressly prohibited in Islaam because of it changing the creation of Allaah, to the extent that the one who does it gains the curse of Allaah and His Rasool Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam.

Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood Radhiallaahu `Anhu said: “Allaah has cursed those women who tattoo (others) and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who get their eyebrows plucked, and those who make gaps between their teeth for the sake of beauty, those who change the creation of Allaah.”

So news of that reached a woman from the tribe of Bani Asad who was called Umm Ya`qoob, so she came and said: “It has reached me about you that you have cursed such-and-such (women)?”

So he said: “And why should I not curse those whom Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam has cursed, and those who are (mentioned) in the Book of Allaah (the Qur’aan)?”

She replied: “I have read what is between the two covers (i.e. the whole Qur’aan) and I did not find in it what you are saying.”

He said: “If you had read it then you had found it, did you not read: “Whatever the messenger gives you, grab hold of it, and whatever he prohibits you from, abandon it.” (Surah Hashr Aayah 7)?

She said: “Yes indeed (I have read it).”

He replied: “Verily he (Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) had prohibited it.”

She said: “I think your wife does it.”

He replied: “So go and have a look.

So she went and looked, but she did not see anything which she had thought.

So he said: “If she was like that I would not live with her (I.e. rather I would have divorced her).”Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. [i]

Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood Radhiallaahu `Anhu also said: “I heard Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam curse those women who pluck their eyebrows, those who make gaps between their teeth (for the sake of beautification) and those who get tattooed, (because) they are those that change the creation of Allaah `Azza Wa Jall.”  Sunan An-Nasaa’ee. [ii]

Although these Ahaadeeth mention women, the prohibition actually applies to both men and women, but women were mentioned because these were things that women were mostly involved in.

And Allaah knows best.

Can my younger brother be my Mahram?

Question:

Can my younger brother act as a Mahram for me and my mother to travel to another country?

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn `Umar Radhiallaahu `Anhu reports that Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allaah and the last day to travel a distance of three days or more (equivalent to 48 miles or 77 kilometres), but that her father, or son, or husband, or brother or some Mahram (e.g. Father in law) should be with her.”  – Saheeh Muslim.[i]

As long as your younger brother is Baaligh (i.e. reached puberty) then he can act as a guardian for you, your mother and the rest of his Mahaarim, consideration is not given to whether he is younger or older than you, all that matters is that he is Baaligh, as Imaam Ibn Nujaym Rahimahullaah explains in Al-Bahrur Raa’iq regarding the conditions for someone to be a guardian for travelling: “It (the ability to be a travel Mahram) does not apply to a fire worshipper who believes it is permissible to marry her (i.e. his Mahram), nor a Muslim relative from whom one is not safe, nor a child who has not reached puberty, nor a madman.” [ii]

So therefore it will be permissible for you to travel with him.

And Allaah knows best.

How long did Nabi Nuh Alaihisalam live?

Question:

How long did Nabi Nuh Alaihisalam call his people to islam? I mean how long did he live?

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Allaah speaks about the Da`wah of Hadhrat Nooh `Alayhis Salaam in Surah Al-`Ankaboot Aayah 14 wherein Allaah says: “And Indeed We had sent Nooh (`Alayhis Salaam) to his people so he remained amongst them for a thousand years minus fifty years (i.e. 950 years), then the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.” [i]

Imaam Ibn Katheer Rahimahullaah reports in Tafseer Ibn Katheer that Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn `Abbaas Radhiallaahu `Anhu said: “Nooh (`Alayhis Salaam) was sent (as a Nabi) when he was forty years old, and he remained amongst his people (calling them to Islaam) for one thousand minus fifty years (i.e. 950 years), and he lived after the flood for sixty years, until the people increased and spread out.” [ii]

Imaam Ibn Katheer Rahimahullaah comments on this and says: “And the closest view (i.e. most correct) is that of (Hadhrat) Ibn `Abbaas (Radhiallaahu `Anhu), and Allaah knows best.” [iii]

So from that we understand Hadhrat Nooh `Alayhis Salaam lived for a total of one thousand and fifty years, forty years before Nubuwwah, nine hundred and fifty years before the flood and sixty years after the flood.

And Allaah knows best.

Detailed description of Salaah with evidences for the Hanafi Madhab

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Often these days we hear people making ignorant claims about the Madhaahib, and the Hanafi Madhab in particular, that the A’immah did not have a basis for many of their rulings, and some rulings were based on weak or even fabricated narrations and other such false accusations.

Because of this, some `Ulamaa had taken it upon themselves to shed some light on just one issue which is possibly the most commonly spoken about, and that is Salaah.

What follows are three books written in english on the subject.

1: The Salah of a Believer by Shaykh Riyadhul Haq – Download as PDF.

This book mentions each posture of salaah alongside the ahaadeeth which are reported concerning it, as well as the authenticity level of each narration according to the Muhadditheen.

2: Fiqh al-Imam by Mufti Abdur Rahman Mangera – Download as PDF.

This book deals with each aspect of the salaah, focusing more on the understanding of the Ahaadeeth which have been narrated regarding it.

3: Authenticity of Salah by Shaykh Muhammad Ilyas Faisal – Download as PDF.

This is a short book which deals with salaah limiting it just to the ahaadeeth for the sake of brevity.

All in all these three books are sufficient for anyone to see the amount of research and effort that the `Ulamaa had done when they gave a ruling on any particular matter.

May Allaah grant us all the understanding.
