Is trimming or shaping of the eyebrows for females allowed?

Question:

Salaam. Mufti saheb is trimming or shaping of the eyebrows for females allowed? جزاكم الله خيرا

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Wa `alaykumus salaam.

Plucking, trimming and shaping of the eyebrows have been expressly prohibited by Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam.

Hadhrat `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood Radhiallaahu `Anhu said: “I heard Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam curse those women who pluck their eyebrows, those who make gaps between their teeth (for the sake of beautification) and those who get tattooed, (because) they are those that change the creation of Allaah `Azza Wa Jall.”  – Sunan An-Nasaa’ee. [i]

Imaam Ibn Nujaym Al-Misri Rahimahullaah says in Al-Bahrur Raa’iq Sharh Kanzud Daqaa’iq:

“In a Hadeeth he (Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) cursed An-Naamisah and Al-Mutanammisah, An-Naamisah is that woman who trims the eyebrow in order to beautify it, and Al-Mutanammisah is the woman who has it done to her.” [ii]

Permission has only been granted if the eyebrows become deformed to the extent that her husband is repelled by her appearance, in that case it will be permissible to trim it to its normal density, but it will not be permissible to simply trim and shape it without a valid need.

Imaam Ibn `Aabideen Rahimahullaah says in Raddul Muhtaar:

“If there is some hair on her face that repels her husband because of it, then it will be farfetched to say it is forbidden to remove it, because adornment of women is sought after for the sake of beauty, but this (ruling of prohibition) will be applied in cases where it (removing hair) is not a necessity.” [iii]

And Allaah knows best.

Does the grave have to be dug a certain depth?

Question:

Salaams. Mufti saheb does the grave have to be dug a certain length in depth eg. 6 foot, 8 foot, etc.

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Wa `alaykumus salaam.

The purpose of the depth of grave is to prevent the smell from escaping, and to prevent wild animals from eating the body.

Imaam Al-Haskafy Rahimahullaah says in Ad-Durrul Mukhtaar:

“(The grave should be at least) The depth of half a person’s height, but if it’s deeper then it is better.” [i]

Imaam Ibn `Aabideen Rahimahullaah comments on that and says in Raddul Muhtaar:

“His statement ‘The depth of half a person’s height…’ or until the height of a person’s chest, but if it’s made deeper until the height of a person then that is best, as in mentioned in Adh-Dhakheerah, so you come to know that the minimum depth is the height of half a person while the maximum is the height of a person.”[ii]

He continues and quotes Imaam Al-Quhustaani Rahimahullaah who said:

“Its depth should be the height of the person, and its width should be half his height.” [iii]

Thus the minimum depth should be half the height of a person, and the maximum depth should be the height of a person.

And Allaah knows best.

Am I allowed to rent out my gold and silver jewelry and receive payment for it?

Question:

Am I allowed to rent out my gold and silver jewelry and receive payment for it? Will it be considered interest?

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

Yes it will be permissible for you to receive payment for lending out your gold and silver jewellery, because it is being rented out as goods for the purpose of wearing and not as money, therefore it will not be considered as Ribaa.

Imaam As-Sughdi Rahimahullaah says in An-Nutafu Fil-Fataawaa:

“Renting out jewellery is permissible for men and women, if it is rented out for a set time with a set price, and once the set time is reached then it becomes necessary to pay the set amount of money regardless of whether it (the jewellery) was used or not.” [i]

Imaam At-Tahaawi Rahimahullaah says in Mukhtasaru Ikhtilaafil `Ulamaa:

“None of the jurists considered it detestable except (Imaam) Maalik (Rahimahullaah), for he considered it detestable but did not forbid it.” [ii]

Can i pray in a classroom at school without a prayer mat?

Question:

Can i pray in a classroom at school without a prayer mat?

Answer:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Alhamdulillaahi was salaatu was salaamu `alaa Rasoolillaahi wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa man waalaahu, wa ba`d:

It is permissible to perform Salaah with or without a mat, because the world has been made a Masjid for this Ummah.

Hadhrat Abu Umaamah Radhiallaahu `Anhu Narrates that Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “I have been favoured with four things: The earth has been made a Masjid and a purifier for my Ummah. I have been sent to all of mankind. I am aided with fear (which Allaah puts in the hearts of the disbelievers) which travels ahead of me for as far as a month’s journey, and war booty has been made permissible for my Ummah.” – Musnad Imaam Ahmad Rahimahullaah. [i]

So Salaah without a mat is valid providing that the place where you are performing is free from any impurities.

Imaam Al-Kaasaani Rahimahullaah mentions in Badaa’i`us Sanaa’i` the conditions for the validity of Salaah and says:

And true purity is having the clothing; body and place of Salaah clean from actual impurities.[ii]

To perform Salaah on a mat is Sunnah and to perform Salaah without a mat is also Sunnah.

Regarding using a mat:

Hadhrat Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudri Radhiallaahu `Anhu said: “Nabi Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam performed Salaah on a straw mat.” – Sunan At-Tirmidhi. [iii]

As for without a mat:

Hadhrat Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudri Radhiallaahu `Anhu said: “We performed I`tikaaf with Nabi Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam on the middle ten days of Ramadhaan, then he (Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) came out on the morning of the twentieth and addressed us and said: “I was shown Laylatul Qadr but I was made to forget it, so seek it during the last ten nights, on the odd numbered nights. And I saw myself prostrating in water and mud, so whomsoever was performing i`tikaaf with Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam then let him return (to the Masjid).” So we returned and we did not see a trace of cloud in the sky. Then a cloud came and rained until the roof of the Masjid began to leak as the roof was made from palm branches. The Iqaamah was given for Salaah, and I saw Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam prostrating in the water and mud, until I saw the traces of mud on his forehead.” – Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. [iv]

So as long as the place where you are performing Salaah is free of impurities, then the absence of a mat will not affect your Salaah.

And Allaah knows best.
